A seminar on “Value of Herbs and their Importance in our Routine Life is ”organized by Department of Botany on September 23, 2015 in the Seminar Hall. 50 students from II and III BZC participated in the Seminar. Sr. Agnes Frank Bs, a Social Activist (fondly known as Anita Sr.) Resource person of the day presented the topic using the Slogan ‘GO GREEN GROW GREEN’. Later she illustrated and explained the most common species of medicinal herbs that are found in our gardens, compound, wayside, riverside, and in close by forests through power point presentation and through her own rich experience. She also spoke about the value of useful ingredients in the form of plants that we use in our daily food. She added that it is very sad to notice how we lose sight and neglect to pay attention to these ever green useful and beautiful plants, however rather busy in the world of digital day and night. A balance is healthy and harmonious as plants and trees contribute greatly for our preventive and promotive healthcare.
She stressed on how it adds to Eco preservation and harmonius lifestyle. If we spend little time with plants, taking troubles for good cause by planting at least 25 herbs in each house and providing clean environment, which really prevents us from dengue, malaria and other communicable diseases.Some of the important herbs she presented were Tulasi, chiretta, touch me not, goosebury, periwincle, hibiscus, mint ,coriander leaves, lemon grass, betel leaves, hibiscus, coleus, nelanelli, aloe vera, bittergourd, brahmi, neem and ingredients like ginger, turmeric, cinemon, pepper, garlic etc.
At the end of the session many students and staff spent long time clearing their doubts and went home motivated to go green and to be responsible for “My Health is in My Hands”.
Principal ,Dr. K. V. Malini in her presidential speech said that herbs around us play an important role in our life and all of us better to make use of these herbs in our daily life be healthy always. Head of the Department of Botany Prof. Dr. M.S. Joishi Kumble executing the duty of welcome said that this is a very good Educational Programe and present need of the society, so students take maximum benefit from this programe and educate the society in this field that one get cured from minor ailments by using natural herbs rather than chemical drugs and become healthy.
