Department of Mathematics and Forum of Mathematics Teachers of Mangalore University (FORMAT) organized a two day workshop on “Laboratory for BSc Mathematics, an introduction to Scilab/Maxima”, during June 10-11,2019. Dr Chethana U. V. and Prof Ganesh Bhat were the resource persons.
Dr. Vijaya Kumari, President of FORMAT inaugurated the workshop by lighting the lamp. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Vijaya Kumari, President of FORMAT said “With the learning, there is a strong need of unlearning, relearning, how to teach the new generation students in this highly technological world. Teachers in this liquid society must be ‘a meddler in the middle’ and the process of teaching is mutual learning for both teachers and students. We should move from the attitude of ‘I do, you do’ to an effective and inclusive approach of ‘we do’.” She said, “Availability of all information at the click of the mouse for the students made the 21st century teaching a very challenging one and teachers should mould themselves to the required environment.” She gave some informative examples of how unlearning can collapse teaching to some extent.
Dr. Chethana U V, Associate professor, University College, Mangaluru gave practical training on “MAXIMA” and examples to show how to solve different types of problems under Maxima. Second day of the workshop, Prof. Ganesh Bhat,Associate Professor, St.Philomena College,Puttur explained about “SCILAB” and also solved graphical problems using scilab.
Dr. Premalatha V, HOD of Mathematics, welcomed the gathering. Dr. K. V Malini, Principal, delivered the Presidential address. Prof. Jephry Rodrigus, Treasurer of FORMAT, proposed vote of thanks. Ms. Keerthi Alva, Faculty of mathematics, compered the formal programme. Around 50 faculty members participated in this workshop from various colleges.
