Outreach Programme – Donation to Flood Victims of Kukkavu Village, Belthangady

August 30, 2019

The recent floods in Dakshina Kannada, probably the greatest ever in its history, affected a lot of people throughout the district. Never before had our district faced such a grave situation. The people had to leave everything behind them, just to move to safety. Thousands of people had to move to relief camps for their survival. It was certainly not an easy situation for them. Help needed to reach them on an urgent basis.

As part of the flood relief and rehabilitation, the NSS units, Youth Red Cross unit and Rovers & Rangers, Staff Welfare Association of Canara College, Mangaluru organized a Flood Relief fund collection campaign at the college premises. The student volunteers gave complete support and worked very hard so as to ensure maximum collection for the affected areas. They collected a sum of Rs. 42,206. Then the essential utensils were bought and packed for 40 families.  On August 30, 2019 the commodities were taken off to Kukkavu Village of Belthangady taluk and handed over to 40 families who were affected by flood in the presence of the Panchayat members of Kukkavu Village.   The day was really unforgettable and such an effort indeed made us truly happy.

The NSS Programme officers, Youth Red Cross Conveners and 5 volunteers got an opportunity to meet and discuss with the former minister Dr. M. Veerappa Moily on the spot. The honourable minister appreciated the initiative and efforts of Canara family members and congratulated the team for the support given to the flood victims.

Students learnt the importance of helping the less fortunate people and empathy towards the needy.
