Maintaining cleanliness and thus safeguarding health are, as far as every Indian is concerned, a duty to our motherland; necessary for a harmonious relation between humanity and nature; and an unavoidable obligation to the coming generation. As far as every human being is concerned, it is his or her duty. Through its continuous efforts at environmental cleanliness and social hygiene, the NSS Units of our college aims to bring about a clean India.
With this objective NSS Units of our college, cleaned of garbage and dirt that had accumulated there for days at Sulthan Battery. The Sultan Battery fort & watch tower, constructed in 1784 by Tipu Sultan is in Boloor, 4 kms from the centre of Mangalore city, the chief port city in the state of Karnataka, India. The watch tower was constructed 15 years before his death in 1784 A.D. Sultan Battery was built of black stones and constructed to obstruct war ships from entering the river which was the major route for English invasion but was then retrieved from English by Tipu Sultan. It was also used as a fort with mounting places for cannons to avoid Britishers to enter Mangalore by sea. It was the major dockyard and arsenal of the ruler. It was a naval station and was of great importance to the sultan as he used it to intercept enemy warships and prevent them from docking. If one climbs to the top of the watch tower by stairs, there is a panoramic view of Arabian Sea shows a blend of natural and man-made beauty. It is now nearly deserted with a few shacks and a boating club nearby, but it is gathering popularity among tourists.
This drive was initiated under the leadership of the NSS Programme Officers Mrs. Seema Prabhu S. and Ms. Kavyashree on February 23, 2020. 58 NSS volunteers collected Garbage of all kind, i.e. plastic tins, polythene bags, bottles, thermocol paper, tetrapacks diapers glass etc. in bags and disposed off. The NSS officers and volunteers expressed their satisfaction at this endeavour and pledged to maintain cleanliness by adopting healthy and environmental friendly practices. They also created awareness to the visitors to use dust bin, not to litter etc to reduce the waste.
