Extension Activity: Ethno botanical Field Study of Medicinal Plants

The department of Botany conducted an activity on Extension Activity: Ethno-botanical field study of Medicinal plants on August 3, 2022 in the botanical garden. 10 students from Karnataka Ayurveda College visited our botanical garden along with one faculty member Dr. Mohan Kishore, professor, Karnataka Ayurveda College, Ashoknagar, Mangalore. Ms. Madhushree, Head, department of Botany guided them and also explained about the medicinal plants used by local communities to treat human ailments. Dr. Mohan Kishore also explained the necessity to preserve the indigenous knowledge on traditional medicines by proper documentation, herbal preparation and also plant identification techniques to our students. Students actively took part in the discussions over the visit. Students saw various medicinal and aromatic plants and learned how to identify them. Our botanical garden has a collection of more than 50 medicinal plants including both wild and cultivated varieties. Students were also exposed to herbs which have many antioxidant and anticancer properties. The visit proved beneficial for the students as they gained a lot of knowledge about medicinal and aromatic plants. Students from Karnataka Ayurveda College also explained about the scope of learning Botany and Ayurveda courses. This helped our students to know about the options available to choose a course for their higher studies. 35 students of III BZC were the participants.
