Blood Stem Cell Awareness and Registration Drive

National Service Scheme units, in conjunction with the Lions & Leo Club of Kadri Hills, Mangaluru, and the DKMS BMST Foundation India, organized a blood stem cell awareness and registration drive on November 10, 2022. The DKMS-BMST Foundation in India is a charitable organisation that works to combat blood cancer as well as a variety of other blood-related conditions.

Mr. Prajeet Sudhakar, Deputy Manager of Donor Recruitment for the DKMS BMST Foundation in India, stated that, similar to blood donation, stem cell donation is also a pious act that can save the lives of patients. The patient can be cured of blood cancer with the aid of new technology by undergoing a blood stem cell transplant.

The Senior Associates of the DKMS BMST foundation India, Shri Mahamitra and Ms Ashitha Steffi J., provided an overview of stem cells, the donation process, and the advantages of blood stem cell registration.

Shri Basty Purushotham Shenoy, co-ordinator of Canara Vikas Institutions, Mangaluru, presided over the programme and appreciated the NSS Units’ innovative approach. Smt Ln Sabitha Shetty, District Co-Ordinator, was the guest of honour. Smt. Ln. Sumithra Shetty, President of the Lions Club, Kadri Hills, Mangaluru, Ln. Philip Pierera, district coordinator for the organ donation programme, and Lions Club members were present.

The children were made aware of the program’s importance and were inspired to participate. Students and staff who agreed to donate blood were enrolled in the programme by DKMS-BMST personnel, who also collected their samples. A total of 304 students signed up to be donors and pledged to help India be free of blood cancer.

Dr. Premalatha V., the principal, extended a warm greeting to the guests and attendees. Ms. Shreema, a volunteer, coordinated the programme. The NSS Programme Officers, Mrs. Seema Prabhu S., Mrs. Vani U.S., Mrs. Sushama C., and Mrs. Vijetha Bhat, Assistant Programme Officers, coordinated the programme.
