Experiential Learning

On May 18, 2023, the Commerce and Management Association organized an experiential learning session for its members at Canara Institute of Bank Management, Manipal. The institute is a dedicated center for higher learning in banking and finance, affiliated with Canara Bank. Accompanied by two staff conveners, Mrs. Usha Nayak and Mrs. Ashalatha, a total of 37 members of the association participated in the session. The students were first taken to the Canara Bank Museum, which showcased photographs of the founder, coins, banking equipment, typewriters, traveler’s cheques, weighing machines, and logos. During the visit, the students received information about the history of Canara Bank, Syndicate Bank, the amalgamation of Syndicate Bank into Canara Bank, as well as its nationalization.

Mr. Dileep, Senior Manager at CIBM, Manipal, then delivered a speech to the students, covering various aspects of banking. He discussed the history of banking, the business of banking, the structure of banks in India, the functioning of the banking system, the products and services offered by banks, different types of loans that are particularly beneficial to students, the requirements for obtaining loans, the associated costs, the future of banking, various social security schemes offered by banks, CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility), and asset liability management. He also emphasized that the banking landscape in India will undergo fundamental changes within the next 10 years.

Later, Sri. Gangadhar S.K., Deputy General Manager of Canara Bank, engaged in an interactive session with the students. He encouraged them to dream and plan for their future aspirations, emphasizing that every dream carries a certain amount of risk and one must have the courage to take that risk. He shared an inspiring tale of a lost son at a fair, drawing a connection between the story and the students’ lives. Furthermore, he highlighted the uncertainty of the future and the importance of being prepared for unexpected events. He urged the students to actively participate in charity, NGO work, social service, and other similar endeavours as his final words of advice.
