The Department of Botany and Zoology organized an educational study tour for the III BZC students to Mysore on May 26 and 27, 2023. Led by a team of dedicated faculty members and accompanied by 32 students, the tour commenced from Canara College, Mangalore. The first day began with a visit to the Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) where Dr. Anbalgan, the Principal Scientist, introduced the students to various instruments used in food research, providing valuable insights into the field of food technology. Later, at Lokarjuna Aqua World, the students had the opportunity to observe and study different fish species, enhancing their understanding of aquatic biodiversity.
After a satisfying lunch, the group visited Shukhavana, a rehabilitation center for birds. The students marveled at the rare and colorful parrot species from around the world housed in Shuka Vana. Additionally, they learned about the sacred plants and trees that adorned the premises, expanding their knowledge of avian biodiversity.
The following day, the students got on a visit to the Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary, renowned for its diverse bird species. Mrs. Jayashree, a Forest Range Deputy Officer and an esteemed alumna, provided an enlightening briefing on the sanctuary’s history. The students were captivated by the picturesque surroundings, vibrant bird species, and presence of small animals such as Bonnet Macaques and Monitor Lizards.
Concluding the tour, the students explored Brindavan Gardens and the KRS Dam, gaining insights into landscape gardening methods and studying the diverse plant species found in Mysore. The educational visit proved to be enriching and experiential, broadening the students’ knowledge across various fields and fostering core values such as global competencies and a quest for excellence. The group returned to Canara College, Mangalore, with memories and lessons that will have a lasting impact.
