The Department of Physics organized an Educational study visit for final B.Sc. students to Microtron, CARRT, CARER, NMR and DST- PURSE at Mangalore University, Mangalagangothri, Konaje on May 29, 2023. A group of 20 students was accompanied by the teaching faculty, Mrs. Sukhalatha.
In the morning session, the team first visited the Microtron Centre. Microtron Centre is AERB accredited laboratory with a Research & Development Centre in Mangalore. Microtron is an electron accelerator. Systematic R&D activities in the field of radiation physics and associated interdisciplinary areas of Science and Technology have been carried out in this research center. Dr. Ganesh Sanjeev and Mr. Dayananda Naik B guided the students.
The team next Visited CARRT and CARER. The Centre for Advanced Studies in Science and Technology (CASST) and Centre for Advanced Research in Environmental Radioactivity (CARER) is the first AERB-accredited laboratory in South India that can undertake testing radioactivity & issue certification for packaged water, food, commodities etc. Scientific officer Dr. Yashodhara Guided the students.
In the afternoon session, the team visited the NMR Instrument Centre and DST- PURSE. NMR measurements provide the identification of unknown materials, determination of chemical structures, quantification of components in a mixture and analysis of conformational and molecular dynamics. NMR is a non-destructive technique that allows full recovery of the original sample. Mrs. Vinitha DSa guided the students in the NMR instrument Centre. Dr. Murari, Dr. Mahesh and Praveen P guided the students in DST-PURSE. The visit endeavored to inculcate values such as fostering global competencies, promoting the use of technology, and a quest for excellence.
