On June 15 and 16, 2023, an industrial visit was organized by the Department of Commerce and Management, Canara College, Mangaluru, for the third-year B.Com students. A group of 30 students along with two faculty members visited Doddabetta Tea Factory and Chocolate Factory in Ooty, as well as the Bee Craft Honey Museum in Vythiri, Wayanad.
During the visit, the students interacted with industry professionals to understand the tea manufacturing process, from the processing of tea leaves to the final production of black tea. The Production Manager provided a formal introduction about the company and its basic processes. In the chocolate manufacturing unit, the students observed the entire production process. Later, they explored the tea manufacturing unit, where they learned about the different stages of tea processing, including withering, crushing, cutting/tearing/curling, shaping, fermentation, drying, cleaning, and grading. The students also gained insights into the production process, layout design, and HR-related practices implemented by the tea factory.
On June 16, 2023, the students visited the Bee Craft Honey Museum at Vythiri, Wayanad. The museum provided valuable information about the history of beekeeping, the anatomy of bees, ancient mentions of bees, and the honey-making/honey-collecting process. Students also learned about the various products bees produce and their uses.
The academic mentors, Mrs. Sushma R Shetty and Mrs. Vinoda V Nayak, accompanied the students during this insightful activity.This industrial visit aimed to fulfill the Fostering Global Competency and Quest for Excellence among the students.
