Under the guidance of Ms. Madhushree and Mrs. Nishvitha Shetty from the Department of Botany, 33 students from III BZC conducted an extension activity targeting high school students in various schools in and around Mangalore. The students were divided into three groups, each consisting of 11 students. Each group was assigned a specific school and tasked with providing science training to the high school students, focusing on a particular aspect of science.

On June 17, 2023, the first group visited Nalanda High School in Mangalore. Their chosen topic was “Plant Physiology – Macro and Micronutrients” as well as Fermentation. They conducted informative sessions and engaged the high school students in interactive discussions.

The second group visited Besant High School in Mangalore on June 19, 2023. Their selected topic was “Transpiration in Plants and Pollen Grain Viability.” Additionally, they discussed the origin of life on Earth, extinct plant and animal species, and how evolution has helped us solve biological problems. The session aimed to broaden the students’ understanding of these scientific concepts.

On June 21, 2023, the third group conducted their session at Ganapathi High School in Mangalore. Their chosen topic was “Pollen Viability, Plant Fertilization, and Parts of a Flower.” The group not only provided theoretical knowledge but also conducted hands-on experiments to enhance the students’ learning experience. Furthermore, our students emphasized the importance of addressing current social issues such as environmental pollution, water conservation, forest preservation, and the significance of protecting plants and safeguarding our oxygen supply.

This extension activity aimed to instill values among the participants, including the promotion of technology utilization, fostering global competencies, and fostering a quest for excellence.
