“Stay Safe Online”- A Series of Awareness Campaigns

In line with the directives of the University Grants Commission (U.G.C.), and MeitY, the IT Association of Canara College organized different programs on cyber security for various user groups under the theme “Stay Safe Online” to create awareness of the safe use of social media platforms, informed usage of digital payment and other uses of internet to save users from cyber fraud and online harm during India’s Presidency of G20.

1.A Written Awareness Quiz Competition on the theme “Stay Safe Online” was organized for the members of the IT Association on January 11, 2023. Adithya B.R, II BCA won the 1st place and Aaryamann Prabhu, I BCA won the 2nd place in the competition. Mr. Karthik C Malsekar, Join Secretary read out the rules of the competition. Mrs. Prathima V Baliga and Mrs. Shailaja Kumary T G, Convenors of the IT Association were present. Altogether 26 students participated in the competition.

2.Extension Activity on “Staying Safe Online”- An Awareness Program was organized by the IT Association members on January 20, 2023, for the students of 9th and 10th std of Canara High School, CBSE, Mangaluru. Ms. Suvidha Shetty, Secretary IT Association explained What is Cyber security, its importance and need, and key terms in connection to cyber security. Mr. Aaryamann Prabhu, Member, IT Association gave an insight into how cyber frauds occur and demonstrated methods to stay safe from such threats, Cyber Hygiene, Careers and job opportunities in Cyber Security. This was followed by a quiz to ensure students understood the key concepts, and takeaways regarding cyber fraud, online harm, and online safety and to reinforce the key messages of the awareness program.

Mrs. Akshatha Shenoy, Principal, Canara High School CBSE, appreciated the members of the IT Association for taking up such initiatives and encouraged students to continue to do the same. Mrs. Prathima V Baliga, Convenor, IT Association facilitated and coordinated the program. Mrs. Shailaja Kumary, Convenor, IT Association, and staff members of Canara High School CBSE were present. Mr. Rajath Gajinkar, member, IT Association welcomed and thanked the members present. Altogether 150 students actively participated in the programme.

3.Extension Activity on Cyber Security Awareness was conducted by Ms. Suvidha Shetty, Mr. Karthik C Malsekar, Ms. Swathi, Ms. Anusha, Ms. Mounika, Ms. Sinchana, Members of IT Association on June 21, 2023, at the KSRTC Bus stand, Bejai to educate the general public on cyber frauds, online harm and how to ensure being safe on the online platform. Members of the association also initiated conversations with passersby at the bus stand about online safety and created awareness among those waiting for buses.

Mrs. Shailaja Kumary T G, Convenor, IT Association facilitated and coordinated the program. Mrs. Prathima V Baliga, Convenor, IT Association and members of the IT Association were present along with the general public.

Besides the above, cyber safety awareness was created through social media platforms by sharing video links, and images and displaying posters/ articles on the Notice Board.
