TheWorld Clean-up Day is celebrated every year to rid our planet of trash. Cleaning up litter and mismanaged waste from our beaches, rivers, forests, and streets harnesses the power of people around the world to achieve incredible things by joining together. This world-changing idea which began in the small northern European country of Estonia, in 2008 has grown into a global movement with millions of volunteers and charismatic leaders.
In compliance with the governmental initiative –‘Swachhata Hi Seva’, which was celebrated from 15th September to 2nd October, the NSS Units of Canara College, Mangaluru, on the occasion of World Clean-up Day, joined hands with Decathlon, Bharath Mall, Mangaluru, in association with Mangalore Surf Club – Club House, Tannirbhavi Beach to organize ‘Beach Clean Up’ at Tannirbhavi Beach on September 16, 2023 from 7:00am to 11:00am.
This drive started by picking up plastic waste, glass bottles etc., at Tannirbhavi Beach. Large number of plastic materials and wastage were collected by the volunteers, thus making the beach area clean and neat. The volunteers created awareness about proper disposal of plastic waste to the shop keepers and the residents of the area. This drive was held to create a sense of responsibility and consciousness among the volunteers and public on appropriate disposal of waste and its effects on our ecosystem. The drive concluded with a refreshing and enjoyable Zumba dance.
Despite the rains, altogether 103 NSS volunteers actively participated in this drive. NSS Programme Officers Mrs. Seema Prabhu S. and Mrs. M. Keerthana Bhat guided the volunteers. Badges were distributed and refreshments served to all the participants. This activity strived to contribute to national development and also inculcate a value system among our students.
