Certificate Course on “Konkani Folklore and Dance’’

A certificate course on ‘KONKANI FOLKLORE AND DANCE’ was organized by Konkani Adhyayana Peeta, Mangalore University for the students of Konkani Bhasha Vidyarthi Mandal of our college for this academic year. This course commenced on November 02, 2023 with the aim to strengthen the culture and traditions of our community. 34 students enrolled for this course of 30 hours duration. Members were assessed on the basis of their attendance of each session. All the 34 students successfully completed the course and were awarded with the certificates. Various sessions were conducted by various resource persons.  The following are the list of some sessions carried out .

Session 1:- Folklore – A session was conducted to create awareness among the Konkani students about Konkani culture, importance of LokVed by explaining its meaning, form and its various categories.

Session 2:- Folk Tales- This session was quite interesting for the students as they got to hear several stories in Konkani language and they got to know various categories of Konkani tales.

Session 3:- Folk songs – This session was very useful for the students as they enjoyed listening to  several folk songs which existed from our ancestral period and they also got knowledge   on various categories of folk songs which can be sung on various occasions  such as baby bathing,  lullaby, while feeding the baby during wedding rituals etc.

Session 4:- Rituals at home –This session was based on the day-to-day rituals carried out at home. Students were made aware of daily rituals at home such as daily hymn, ode, aarthi, sandhi, prayers etc.

Session 5:- Home Medicines – This session was based on the use of  various medicinal herbs, plants, leaves, roots which are found in our garden and our nature.

Session 6:- Beliefs and Practices – This session made the students aware about the various religious and cultural festivities celebrated by the Konkani community.

Session 7:-Traditional Cultural Fairs and Gatherings–This session helped the students to get knowledge about the various Traditional Cultural Fairs such as Prathishte Utsav, Mannami (Navaratri ), Karthik Punnav during Karthik Maas, Nopi Okkul etc., carried out by the Konkani community gathers.

Session 8:- Folk Instruments – This session created interest amongst students about “Folk Instruments’’  such as Gumta, Damam, Tamki etc., these were much in use in ancient times. The session aimed at influencing the present generation as they would carry on the legacy for the next generations .

Session 9:- Folk Dance – This session made students aware about Konkani Cultural Folk Dance such as Pugadi, Toni Khel etc.,

Session 10:- Marriage Rituals – This session helped the students to know about various rituals such as Konkani Vivah and Lagna Sampraday.

Session 11:- Food Items and Rituals – This session made students understand what are the various food items prepared during various seasons and seasonal food items and students were shown the slides displaying  ancient utensils.

Session 12:-Bridal Decorations – This session helped students to know about traditional dressing of both bride and groom.

Session 13:- Folk Music – The students gained knowledge about various kind of songs, music etc.,

Session 14:- Family Cultural Celebrations –The joy of a family get together is experienced in family cultural celebrations like sutta punnav, deepavali, vaina pooja etc.,

Session 15:- Agrarian Vocabularies – This session helped the students know about various vocabularies related to agriculture such as Krushi, Sheth, Toth etc.,

Students Gained a deep understanding of Konkani folklore including its history, traditions and cultural significance.
