Basic science laboratories play a crucial role in advancing scientific knowledge, fostering innovation, and training the next generation of scientists and researchers. They provide the practical foundation for a wide range of scientific disciplines. The Laboratories are integral part of science education. Students gain hands – on experience and practical skills through laboratory work, reinforcing theoretical concepts learned in the classroom.
To cultivate an interest in fundamental science, the Science Association, in collaboration with the Departments of Basic Sciences, organized a “Basic Science Lab-2023” for the high school students on November 04, 2023. The program drew participation from a total of 118 students and 14 teachers, representing 11 schools.
The program commenced with an inaugural ceremony featuring the chief guest Prof. Vrashabharaj Jain, Rtd. Vice Principal & HOD of Physics, S.V.S. College, Bantwal. Dr. Premalatha V., Principal of Canara College, along with Science Association convenors Dr. Asha Kiran Pakkala and Mrs. Poornima, and student convenors Mr. V. Venkatesh, Ms. Deepthika, and Ms. Mansvi, graced the inauguration ceremony.
The chief guest delivered a speech highlighting the significance of studying basic science, emphasizing the importance of the program and its effectiveness. The chief guest addressed the disparities between current and traditional education, emphasizing that basic science topics are dynamic and constantly evolving. He underscored the need for both teachers and students to adapt and stay updated, providing insights into effective strategies for class preparation in the ever-changing landscape of basic science. Acknowledging the dynamic nature of basic science topics, the chief guest also highlighted the necessity of engaging all five senses to foster a deeper interest in studies.
The presidential address was delivered by Dr. Premalatha V. Ms. Shravyashree (III BSc) and Ms. Shrijanya (III BSc) invoked the blessings of the almighty. Ms. Rachita (III BSc) extended a warm welcome to the gathering. Ms. Shetty Ananya Jagannath (II BSc) introduced the guest speaker, while Ms. Deepthika, the convenor of science association provided an introduction to the Basic Science Lab. The vote of thanks was extended by Mr. V. Venkatesh, the convenor of science association and the program was adeptly hosted by Ms. Manasvi, the co-convenor of science association.
The event demonstration commenced at 10:30 am following the inaugural function. Students were organized into four groups and sequentially directed to Botany, Chemistry, Physics, and Zoology laboratories to engage in hands-on experiments. The demonstrations were facilitated by students from the III B.Sc. and members of the Science Association. In a cyclic order, students visited three labs in the morning and one lab after the lunch break. Each laboratory featured approximately 10-12 experiments, accompanied by informative PowerPoint presentations on various engaging topics. The program concluded by 3 pm, with a total of 235 students participating. Feedback forms were distributed at the end of the event to gather the students’ opinions, reflecting a successful effort in cultivating interest in Basic Science courses among the participants.
