National Service Scheme units of Canara College, in association with Dakshina Kannada District Administration, District Panchayat and Mangaluru Municipal Corporation organised a vibrant walkathon – “Namma Nade Matagatteya Kade” on April 21, 2024 at 7:30am from Narayana Guru Circle, Ladyhill to Government School, Gandhinagar to raise voter awareness among students, new voters and citizens as part of the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme initiated by the Election Commission of India (ECI). 47 Volunteers participated in this activity.
Voter Awareness is crucial for a healthy democracy, as informed and engaged citizens are more likely to participate in elections and make informed choices. The event aimed to encourage active participation of the citizens in the electoral process and highlight the importance of voting in strengthening democracy in view of the ensuing Lok Sabha Elections.
The event was inaugurated by the District Deputy Commissioner Sri Mullai Muhilan MP, IAS by flagging off the Walkathon from Narayana Guru Circle and the event culminated at Gandhinagar School. The walkathon saw enthusiastic participation from Sri Anand C L, Commissioner, MCC, Dr. Ananth K, CEO, Zilla Panchayath, NSS Volunteers, NSS Programme Officers, SVEEP Volunteers, and District Administration Staff who carried placards and banners with slogans promoting voter awareness. The event aimed to spread the message of electoral participation and encouraged individuals to cast their vote responsibly. He further emphasized the significance of voting in the world’s largest democracy and encouraged young voters to exercise their right responsibly; and thus play an active role in shaping the future of the nation. Furthermore, he said, “Voting is not just our right, but a responsibility.”
The entire gathering took the National Voters’ Pledge following the Chief Guest. They pledged to abide by the faith in democracy and to uphold the democratic traditions of our country. Next, one of the participant NSS Volunteers was asked to air his views. A powerful speech on the necessity and importance of voting was given by Mr. Sourav Salian of Canara College. This was followed by the highlight of the event- a street play performed by the NSS Volunteers of Father Muller’s Medical College. It was an eye-opening experience.
The program was wrapped up with the vote of thanks and singing of our National Anthem. Overall, this walkathon was a resounding success. Refreshments were served to the participants of the walkathon. The NSS Programme Officers, Mrs. Seema Prabhu S. and Mrs. M. Keerthana Bhat coordinated this extension activity.
