In today’s fast-paced world, fostering innovation and protecting ideas depend heavily on understanding and safeguarding intellectual property rights (IPR), such as patents, trademarks, and copyrights. Recognizing the critical importance of IPR, our college’s IPR cell organized a workshop titled “Managing Your Intellectual Property Rights” on May 18, 2024.
The workshop was designed to educate students from the M.Com. and MCA programs on the fundamentals of trademarks and the enforcement of copyrights, which are essential aspects of IPR. By covering these topics, the workshop aimed to encourage and support innovative thinking and the creation of original works.
The first session was led by Dr. Jayamol P S, an Assistant Professor of Law at Vaikunta Baliga College of Law, Udupi. Dr. Jayamol focused on the essentials of trademark protection, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding one’s brand. She explained the complex process of protecting brand identities and reputations, using practical examples and case studies to illustrate the significance of trademark registration and enforcement strategies. Her insightful explanations provided students with a clear understanding of how to navigate the trademark landscape to secure and defend their brands effectively.
The second session was conducted by Dr. Chandralekha V, an Assistant Professor of Law from SDM Law College, Mangaluru. This session delt into the workings of copyright law, focusing on the rights of creators and the methods available to enforce these rights. Dr. Chandralekha’s interactive discussions offered valuable insights into the protection of creative works. She explained how creators can influence copyright law to safeguard their intellectual property, empowering participants with the knowledge to effectively manage and enforce their copyrights.
The workshop commenced with an inaugural ceremony, graced by the presence of Principal Dr. Premalatha V. In her presidential remarks, Dr. Premalatha emphasized the critical importance of understanding IPR. She highlighted the necessity of advocating for our rights and underscored how essential IPR education is in safeguarding inventions and creative works. The ceremony opened with a prayer offered by Ms. Shravyashree U., Ms. Kshama Kunder, and Ms. Keerthana, all from III B.Sc. Mrs. Soujanya D, the staff convenor, warmly welcomed the attendees, setting a positive tone for the day. Mrs. Poornima, staff convenor, provided an insightful introduction to the workshop’s objectives and significance. Ms. Sonali then introduced the esteemed resource persons for the sessions.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Sambhrama R. (II B.Sc.), expressing gratitude to all those who contributed to the success of the workshop. Ms. Manasvi (II B.Sc.) compered the event.
Overall, 72 students from the M.Com. and MCA programs benefited from the workshop. The sessions provided them with essential tools and knowledge to understand and protect their intellectual property, preparing them to innovate and create with confidence.
