In commemoration of World Environment Day, the National Service Scheme Units and Student Welfare Council of Canara College conducted a one day extension activity of Sapling Plantation Drive on June 19, 2024 at its adopted village, Kodman. 38 of our ever dedicated NSS volunteers & Student Council Members planted numerous fruit-bearing saplings in the vicinity of the D.K.Z.P.H.P. School, Kodman and in the surroundings of the graveyard.
In 1972, at the Stockholm Conference, the UN General Assembly designated June 05 as World Environment Day to raise awareness and drive action to protect our environment, and promote sustainable practices. Each year, World Environment Day (WED) revolves around a central theme, focusing on a specific environmental issue. Theme for World Environment Day 2024: “Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience” emphasizes the actions that are crucial amidst the intensification of the triple planetary crisis: Climate Change, Nature and Biodiversity Loss, and Pollution and Waste. The theme also underscores that restoring our planet’s ecosystems requires collective action and individual responsibility. It aligns with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and also encourages everyone to contribute to solutions.
The first WED was celebrated in 1973 with the theme: “Only One Earth”. 52 years on, the motto is as pertinent as ever – this planet is our only home, and humanity must safeguard its finite resources. Every year, WED is celebrated, with a different host country and theme. Every year, it also features an impactful slogan, tailored to the theme. Slogan for 2024 is “Our Land. Our Future. We are #Generation Restoration” In consonance with the motto and slogan of World Environment Day, the enthusiastic volunteers strived to halt the degradation of ecosystems by planting saplings, and restore Mother Earth’s greenery.
The sapling plantation initiative turned out to be a resounding success as it succeeded in mobilizing transformative action from the school children who voluntarily and joyfully stepped forward to take a sapling home to be planted in their yard. The activity was organised under the guidance of the Principal Dr. Premalatha V., Administrator, Dr. Deepthi Nayak, the NSS Programme Officers, Mrs. Seema Prabhu S. and Mrs. M. Keerthana Bhat, and Student Welfare Mentors Mrs. Babitha S & Mrs. Smitha M., and the Assistant Physical Education Director Mr. Karthik M. The Head Master and teaching staff of Kodman School as well as villagers, extended their unflinching support in this noble endeavor.
We, at Canara, strongly believe that only with healthy ecosystems we can enhance people’s livelihood, counteract climate change, and stop the collapse of biodiversity. For a sustainable and resilient future let’s become a part of #GenerationRestoration , and resolve to heal our planet by making responsible choices!
