Internal Quality Assurance Cell and Centre for PG Studies in Commerce organised the Golden Jubilee Memorial, a two-day workshop on “Research Methodology Essentials” for faculty on June 20 and 21, 2024.
The workshop began with an invocation seeking blessings from the almighty, followed by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by esteemed dignitaries. Dr. Prakash Pinto, Professor and Dean of the Department of Business Administration at St. Joseph Engineering College, Mangaluru, inaugurated the workshop. In his inaugural address, he emphasised three essential skills for research paper writing: research skills, technical proficiency, and effective communication. Dr. Pinto also highlighted the importance of research contributing to social causes in our immediate surroundings.
The inaugural ceremony was presided over by Sri CA M. Jagannath Kamath, the correspondent of the college. In his presidential remarks, Sri Kamath underscored the necessity of pursuing a PhD in the teaching profession, emphasising its current mandatory status.
Dr. Premalatha V., the college principal, extended a warm welcome to the gathering. Mrs. Anasuya Bhagvath, IQAC Coordinator and the person in charge of the workshop, introduced the guest to the audience. Mrs. Swathi Nayak, PG Coordinator, delivered the vote of thanks, and Mrs. Megha hosted the programme.
The workshop comprised four sessions focused on research methodology. Below is a brief overview of each session.
Session 1: Foundations for Research- scholarly approach to research
The first session titled “Foundations for Research: A Scholarly Approach” was conducted by Dr. Ajay, Assistant Professor in the Department of Commerce at GFGC Haleyangadi. The session commenced with an introduction to research methodology, followed by an exploration of the research process. Dr. Ajay elaborated on various research types, including quantitative research, qualitative research, exploratory research, causal research, experimental research, and ex-post facto research.
During the session, Dr. Ajay also discussed the research paradigm, drawing an analogy between the methodology and a dense forest—the “research jungle.” This metaphor emphasized the complexity and multifaceted nature of research. Participants gained an overview of the research landscape, understanding its intricacies and challenges.
Mrs. Lavina S. Noronha, Assistant Professor in the Department of Commerce and Management at Canara College, Mangaluru, graciously hosted the session. The event concluded with Dr. Ajay addressing queries posed by the participants. At the end, Mrs. Dejamma A., Head of the Department of Commerce and Management, presented a memento to Dr. Ajay as a token of gratitude
Session 2:Theoretical Frameworks and hypothesis: Integrating Literature Review in Research.
The second technical session of the workshop, led by Dr. T Mallikarjunappa, focused on integrating literature reviews into research. Faculty members gained advanced skills in conducting literature reviews, applying theoretical frameworks, and formulating research hypotheses. Dr. Mallikarjunappa emphasized the importance of literature reviews in research, clarified misconceptions, and highlighted their role in identifying gaps, shaping research questions, and providing a solid foundation for new studies. Practical examples illustrated the significance of theoretical frameworks. Participants learned to develop clear, testable hypotheses grounded in their literature reviews. The session also addressed how literature reviews fit into overall research design. At the conclusion of the session, the resource person addressed questions posed by the participants. The event culminated with Mrs. Seema Prabhu S., Assistant Professor in the Department of Commerce and Management at Canara College Mangalore, presenting a memento to the resource person. Mrs. Sneha Pai, lecturer in the M Com department, hosted the session.
Session 3: Evaluating Evidence: Statistical Techniques for Hypothesis Testing
Ms. Sandhya M, Assistant Professor at Government First Grade College, Kaup, conducted a session on statistical techniques for hypothesis testing. The session emphasized the importance of hypothesis testing in data-driven decision-making. Various hypothesis tests (T-test, Chi-square, ANOVA) were discussed, along with the definition of null hypothesis (H0) and alternative hypothesis (H1). Practical examples demonstrated the application of hypothesis testing using statistical software (SPSS). An interactive Q&A session allowed participants to clarify doubts. Mrs. Dejamma A, Head of the Department, Commerce & Management, expressed gratitude by presenting a memento to Ms. Sandhya M. Mrs. Shwetha Pai M, Lecturer in the Department of M.Com., served as the Master of Ceremony.
Session 4: Exploring techniques and best practices in research report writing
The final technical session on research report writing featured Dr. Abhinandan Kulal, Research Associate at Yenepoya-Deemed to be University. Dr. Kulal meticulously explained the step-by-step process of crafting research reports, covering essential components such as the introduction, objectives, literature review, hypothesis framing, data analysis, findings, conclusion, and bibliography. He generously shared practical tips and techniques for effective report writing, leveraging various AI tools like Chat GPT, Mendeley, and Quillbot. Additionally, Dr. Kulal provided insights into publishing research papers in reputable journals.
The session was graciously hosted by Ms. Prathiksha Poojary, lecturer in the Department of Commerce and Management. It concluded with Mrs. Dejamma A., Head of the Commerce and Management Department, presenting a memento to Dr. Kulal, followed by an engaging Q&A session.
The two-day workshop on research methodology essentials concluded with closing remarks delivered by Mrs. Anasuya Bhagvath, IQAC Coordinator and workshop in charge.
