“Over attack of thoughts lead to confusion. As thoughts are involuntary and thinking is voluntary, one should have control over one’s thoughts and strive to be better today than we were yesterday”, emphasized Dr. N.K. Vijayan Karippal, Principal of Expert Pre-University College, Valachil, who was speaking as the Chief Guest at the orientation programme for the First-Year undergraduate students of Canara College held at T. V. Raman Pai Convention Centre on August 12, 2024. Highlighting the importance of consistent efforts, he said, “With potentials alone one cannot attain perfection, consistent practice enables one to achieve the desired goal. In short, perseverance can outdo talent.” He also pointed out that the greatest impediments of success are brooding over the past and worrying about the future, making one imprisoned between the past and the future, thereby losing the precious present.
Dr. N. K. Vijayan described degree education as a journey of learning that requires continuous effort and dedication, and stressed that love and joy in our endeavors prevent them from feeling burdensome. While concluding he introduced the 3 C’s to the freshers: Consistent study and sleep habit, Create conducive learning style, and Compare not.
Mr. D. Vikram Pai, member of the Canara High School Association presided over the event. He remarked that education not just for enhancing knowledge but also for transforming oneself and the world around. He advised placing faith in actions is of much more important rather than just their outcomes. He also mentioned the responsibility of teachers in empowering students both technically and spiritually in today’s complex and interconnected world. Furthermore, he quoted Winston Churchill: “Success is not final. Failure is not fatal. It’s the courage to go on that matters.”

Mr. Harshith, the President of the previous academic year’s Student Council, also participated in the event, sharing his insights and experiences as an alumnus. Mrs. Babitha S., Student Welfare Mentor, warmly welcomed the gathering, while Mrs. Smitha M., another Student Welfare Mentor, delivered the vote of thanks.
The event was also graced by the presence of Dr. Deepti Nayak, Administrator at Canara College, and Mr. Avinash, Student Welfare Mentor. Mrs. Ashalatha, Assistant Professor in the Department of Commerce & Management, was the first session Emcee.
The second session featured Mrs. Mamatha Bhandary, a Mental Health Professional from Canara Educational Institutions, who guided the students with a session titled “Navigating Your Academic Journey – A Roadmap to Success.”
In the third session Programme Heads Mrs. Dejamma A, Head. Dept. of Commerce, Mrs. Sandhya B., Dept. of Chemistry, Mrs. Babitha S., Dept. of Computer Science & Applications and Mrs. Seema Prabhu S., Dept. of Business provided detailed information about their respective programs. Additionally, Mrs. Shailaja Kumari T. and Mrs. Usha Nayak provided important information regarding e-attendance and examinations. This session was compered by Mrs. Sushama C., Head of the Department of Zoology.
A total of 450 Students and 50 parents attended the orientation programme with great zeal and enthusiasm.
The event successfully engaged and motivated students by featuring accomplished speakers and alumni, inspiring them to approach their college journey with dedication and enthusiasm.The program facilitated the building of a sense of community and belonging among the incoming students, helping them integrate into the college environment more effectively.
