Basic Science Laboratories are educational facilities designed to provide students with hands-on experience in fundamental scientific concepts across disciplines such as biology, chemistry, and physics. These labs enable students to apply theoretical knowledge through experimentation, fostering essential skills like data collection, analysis, and the use of scientific equipment. They emphasize the scientific method, encouraging students to formulate hypotheses, conduct experiments, and draw evidence-based conclusions while instilling safety practices and promoting collaborative learning. Overall, Basic Science Laboratories inspire student engagement in science, preparing them for further study.
To foster a passion for fundamental science, the Science Association, in partnership with the Department of Basic Science, hosted a Basic Science Lab 2024 for high school students on September 13, 2024. The event saw the involvement of 82 students and 8 teachers from 8 different schools.
The programme began with an opening ceremony, with Dr. Shamprasad Varija Raghu, Associate Professor, Division of Neuroscience, Yenepoya Research Centre (YRC), Yenepoya, as the chief guest. Dr. Premalatha V., Principal of Canara College, along with Science Association convenors Dr. Asha Kiran Pakkala and Mrs. Soujanya D, and student convenors Ms. Manasvi, Ms. Sharanya T. S. graced the inauguration ceremony.
The Chief Guest, Dr. Shamprasad Varija Raghu, delivered a speech emphasizing that experimental skills are more important than theoretical knowledge. He addressed the students about basic science, reflecting on a time when practical experiments were not available, whereas now students have the opportunity to conduct experiments and obtain results.
The presidential address was delivered by Dr. Premalatha V. Ms. Shravya K., Nireeksha, and Harshitha P. III BSc, invoked the blessings of the almighty. Ms. Shetty Ananya Jagannath extended a warm welcome to the gathering. Ms. Sambrahma III BSc, introduced the guest speaker, while Ms. Manasvi, the student convenor of the Science Association, provided an introduction to the Basic Science Lab. The vote of thanks was extended by Ms. Janisha II BSc, and the program was adeptly hosted by Ms. Sharanya T. S., the student co-convenor of the Science Association.
The event demonstration commenced at 10:30 am following the inaugural function. Students were organized into four groups and sequentially directed to Botany, Chemistry, Physics, and Zoology laboratories to engage in hands-on experiments. The demonstrations were facilitated by students from the III B.Sc. and II BSc. and members of the Science Association. In a cyclic order, students visited three labs in the morning and one lab after the lunch break. Each laboratory featured approximately 10 -12 experiments. The program concluded by 3 p.m. with a total of 172 students participating. Feedback forms were distributed at the end of the event to gather the students’ opinions, reflecting a successful effort in cultivating interest in Basic Science courses among the participants.
