Two-Day University Level Workshop on “Research Methodology”

The Internal Quality Assurance Cell in association with the Department of Basic Science & Department of Computer Science & Applications organized the Two-Day University Level Workshop on “Research Methodology” on February 28 & March 1, 2025 in the Smt. Ratna S Shenoy Memorial Seminar Hall.

The Chief Guest Dr. Nagesh H R, Principal, Canara Engineering College, Mangaluru, inaugurated the workshop by lighting the traditional lamp, symbolizing the pursuit of knowledge and enlightenment. In his inaugural address, he emphasized the pivotal role of research methodology in fostering a culture of inquiry, critical thinking, and academic excellence. He highlighted the importance of ethical research practices, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the need for faculty members to stay updated with evolving research trends. Encouraging participants to actively engage in scholarly pursuits, he stressed on how systematic research contributes to innovation, problem-solving, and overall professional growth in academia.

Sri D Vikram Pai, Governing Council member, CHS Association, Mangaluru presided over the programme and said “Knowledge is the foundation of discovery and innovation.” He highlighted how research serves as a bridge between curiosity and meaningful advancements, making workshops like this essential for nurturing a strong research mindset. Encouraging faculty members to engage deeply in the process, he underscored that structured research methodology is key to generating new insights and contributing to academic and societal progress.

Mrs. Prathima V. Baliga, IQAC Coordinator welcomed the guest and gathering. Mrs. Jayabharathi K P, Head, Centre for PG Studies in Computer Applications introduced the Chief Guest. Dr. Ashakiran Pakkala, Head, Department of Physics explained about the workshop. Mrs. Babitha S, Head, Department of Computer Science & Applications proposed the vote of thanks. Mrs. Vinutha, Department of Computer Science & Applications compered the programme. Dr. Deepthi Nayak, Administrator, Dr. Premalatha V, Principal, Dr. Kalpana Prabhu J, Vice Principal, Mrs. Sandhya B, Former Head, Dept of Chemistry, Mrs. Anasuya Bhagvath, IQAC coordinator were present.

The workshop was structured into four insightful sessions, each covering a crucial aspect of research methodology:

Session 1: Research Problem Identification and Literature Review by Dr. Nagesh H. R., Principal, Canara Engineering College, Mangaluru, focused on systematically defining research problems, conducting literature reviews, identifying research gaps, and formulating effective research objectives, providing participants with a strong foundation in research methodology.

Session 2: Research Design and Methodology by Dr. Vasudeva, Professor, Department of ISE, NMAM Institute of Technology, Nitte, covered research planning, data collection techniques, sampling methods, and experimental designs. He emphasized the importance of a well-structured research design to ensure accuracy, reliability, and validity in academic research.

Session 3: Research Ethics: The Backbone of Responsible Discovery by Dr. Arun M. Isloor, Professor (HAG) & Former Head, Department of Chemistry, NITK Surathkal, highlighted the significance of research integrity. He discussed ethical principles such as honesty, objectivity, confidentiality, responsible publication, and the consequences of research misconduct, plagiarism, and unethical citation practices.

Session 4: Data Analysis, Interpretation, and Reporting by Dr. Shamprasad Varija Raghu, Associate Professor, Yenepoya Research Centre, Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), provided insights into selecting appropriate data analysis techniques, interpreting research findings effectively, and presenting results in a clear and structured manner while emphasizing accuracy, transparency, and ethical reporting in research.

The sessions were highly interactive, with participants actively engaging and clarifying their doubts with the resource persons. The workshop concluded with valuable feedback from the participants, followed by the distribution of certificates. Altogether, 50 participants took part in the program, which concluded on a patriotic note with the singing of the National Anthem.

The session strived to contribute to national development by fostering a research-oriented mindset and promoting high academic standards. It also aimed to inculcate a value system among participants by emphasizing ethical research practices and integrity while encouraging a quest for excellence through continuous learning.
