Awareness Programme for Teaching Staff on “Prevention of Drugs and Substance Abuse”

The Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC),through the Staff Welfare Association, organized an awareness programme on the Prevention of Drugs and Substance Abuse for teaching staff by Mangalore City Police Central Sub-division in association with K. S.Hegde Medical Academy, on July 23, 2018, in the College Seminar Hall.

Mr. Uday Nayak, ACP, Central Sub-division, Mangaluru City, while addressing the teachers said – “We have been coming across an alarming increase of drug abuse amongst the youngsters in recent years. The youths are topping the charts for the wrong reasons and are becoming the victims of this menace. Further, highlighting on the major problems encountered, he expressed that it causes a major setback in their social life and very badly hinders the well-being of the community at large. Therefore, teachers must take note of every behavioral swing amongst the students and also create awareness on this, so that the students will not be the victims of substance abuse.”

Dr. Srinivas Bhat U and Dr. Santhosh Prabhu, Professors, Dept. of Psychiatry, K.S. Hegde Medical Academy, Mangalore and KSHEMA, Deralakatte, explained about the Life Skills to be possessed by the teachers in particular to negotiate effectively at home, college or workplace.

Principal Dr. K. V. Malini in her message said – “Growing rate of drug and substance abuse amongst the students is major and serious that issue that calls upon due vigilance and attention of all the stakeholders concerned in preventing it. Educational Institutions are making every effort to keep a strong check on the activities of its students so that students refrain from engaging in unhealthy activities. It is our bounded responsibility to save our present generation from drug abuse in order to build a hopeful, progressive and drug-free generation for the years to come.”

Staff Welfare Secretary Mrs. Pushpalatha delivered the welcomed address. IQAC Coordinator Dr. Premalatha V., proposed the vote of thanks.

The session was effective in creating awareness on the issue and enabled the teachers to learn their responsibility towards the same. The session strived to achieve the core values of contributing to national development and inculcating value system.
