Educational Field Visit to Animal Husbandry

Animal husbandry is concerned with animals that are raised for value- added products.

An educational field trip to ‘Animal Husbandry’ from Mangalore to Bantwal was organized on July 29, 2022 for II B.Sc. (BZC) students to gain practical knowledge on Pisciculture, Dairy farming, and Apiculture.

The study on fish rearing was carried out in Aquatic Biosystems, Vamanjoor. Mr. Ronald D’Souza explained the culturing technique of ornamental fishes. He also gave inspirational speech based on his life experience of setting up of the local business which gradually became a global export business. Students then visited the entire farm to study the different ornamental fishes cultured, and also to know the tanks and equipments used in fish culture.

The students visited Oddor dairy farm, Ganjimatta to understand the housing management of the dairy farm, feeding and raising of dairy animals, and the utility of cattle in agriculture and biogas production. They also noted different breeds of cattle. About seven types of cattle breeds were present in the farm. The visit provided an inspiring example of the efforts made by MLA Rajesh Naik to transform 120 acres of barren land into a lush green farm.

Last visit was to honey rearing center, Near Ferla Church, Bantwal owned by Mr. Arwin D’Souza. He explained the theoretical aspects of honey rearing technique followed by the field visit. The resource person, Mr Arwin D’Souza gave a detailed information on modern method of bee keeping, bee species, bee keeping equipments and also the dos and don’ts while handling bees.

The visit met all its objectives as it was designed to cover the most essential components of animal husbandry and to meet educational curriculum. Altogether 32 students actively participated.
