On June 23, 2023, a clean-up drive was organized by the Student Welfare Council, Canara College. The event aimed to raise awareness about environmental conservation and the importance of preserving the Western Ghats.
The clean-up drive commenced at 5:45 am when the student gathered at the designated meeting point. After a brief introduction and briefing about the importance of the Western Ghats, the journey began at 6:30 am. The students arrived at the Western Ghats at approximately 9:30 am. Following a hearty breakfast at 9:35 am, the trek officially began. The students covered a distance of 7 kilometres, with a 3.5-kilometer each uphill stretch and downhill stretch. Throughout the trek, the focus was on cleaning up the trail by collecting and disposing of various types of litter, such as alcohol bottles, plastic waste, and chocolate snack wrappers.
Upon reaching the final destination, Didupe Falls, at around 12:30 pm, the participants took some time to appreciate the natural beauty and enjoy the picturesque surroundings. A sense of accomplishment was felt, knowing that the area had been cleaned and restored to its pristine state. The return journey commenced at 1:45 pm, after a satisfying lunch and a memorable group photo. On the way back, the group made a stop at Karinjeshwar Temple, where they took a moment to appreciate the cultural significance of the region. The students arrived back at Canara College, Mangalore, at 6:00 pm, concluding the successful clean-up drive. 37 member representatives of student council along with the President of Student Council Mr. Abhin Bangera were part of this programme. Student Welfare Mentor Mrs. Swathi Nayak, Physical Director Mr. Avinash Shetty and M.Com faculty Mrs. Megha coordinated the programme.
The event served as a reminder that our actions today have a direct impact on our future. With the motto “What We Save Saves Us,” the clean-up drive emphasized the importance of collective responsibility and the urgent need to safeguard our ecosystems for generations to come.
