May 22, 2024

Celebrating the cauldron of culture and history with World Museum Day, 36 National Service Scheme Volunteers of Canara College on May 18, 2024 paid a visit to Mahatma Gandhi Museum, Mangaluru, on May 18, 2024 at 9:30am.

Museums are invaluable repositories of artistic, cultural, historical, traditional and fascinating artefacts. Many artefacts housed in museums are open to the public providing valuable insights in the lifestyles, tools and creations of ancient civilizations. On World Museum Day, we thank museums for their dedication to science and for their special role in protecting and sharing so much knowledge, and preserving culture.

Since 1977, the International Council of Museums (I.C.O.M.) has been celebrating International Museum Day every year on May 18. The event focuses on a different theme every year, reflecting relevant topics or challenges encountered by museums globally. The theme for the year 2024 is ‘Museums for Education and Research’. This theme underscores the pivotal role of cultural institutions in providing a holistic educational experience.

Dealing with this year’s theme, and speaking as the Chief Guest on the occasion of International Museum Day at Mahatma Gandhi Museum, Mangaluru, Mr. Subhaschandra Basu, Convener of the Mangaluru Chapter of Intach said, “A museum should not be confined to the four walls. Instead, we should consider the whole world and our environment as an open museum because there is so much to be conserved, to learn about, and to be studied.” The other dignitaries gracing the occasion were Sri Kasturi Balakrishna Pai and Sri Payyanur Ramesh Pai, Director, Mahatma Gandhi Museum. Also, the NSS Programme Officers of Canara College, Mrs. Seema Prabhu S. and Mrs. M. Keerthana Bhat, along with 36 NSS Volunteers enthusiastically participated in this event.
