May 30, 2024

The NSS Units of Canara College, in collaboration with the Yuvanika Foundation and Health Volunteers, on account of World No Tobacco Day, organized a Talk on ‘Role of Youth Volunteers for a Tobacco-free Future’ on May 29, 2024 at 3.30p.m.. The keynote speaker was Mr. Raghuveer S., Operations and Program Head, Yuvanika Foundation.

World No Tobacco Day serves as a global platform to raise awareness about the devastating health effects of tobacco use and advocate for effective tobacco control policies. Observed annually on May 31st, this day brings together individuals, communities, governments, and organizations worldwide to highlight the dangers of tobacco consumption and the importance of prevention and cessation efforts.

In his address, Mr. Raghuveer explained that tobacco consumption is intricately linked to a myriad of health concerns, ranging from life-threatening conditions like cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and respiratory ailments to a host of other debilitating illnesses. Moreover, the impact extends beyond physical health, encompassing mental well-being and socio-economic factors.

Furthermore, raising concerns, the speaker pointed out, “Tobacco addiction not only diminishes quality of life but also burdens health care systems and economies, siphoning resources that could otherwise be allocated to vital public health initiatives.” Then, he added, “Addressing tobacco use isn’t merely a health imperative but also a multifaceted endeavor crucial for fostering healthier communities and nurturing a brighter tobacco-free future.”

Calling on all passionate individuals to learn, act, and engage in efforts to create a tobacco-free future for all, he mobilized them to lead tobacco cessation efforts and advocate for smoke-free policies, and also empowered them to pave the way for a more sustainable future grounded in well-being and environmental stewardship. Lastly, in his clarion call, he said, “Be part of the change!” A total of 92 enthusiastic volunteers took part in this programme. The NSS Programme Officers Mrs. Seema Prabhu S. and Mrs. M. Keerthana Bhat coordinated this program.
