International Yoga Day Celebration – 2024

June 23, 2024

On June 21, 2024 the National Service Scheme Units of Canara College celebrated International Yoga Day at 8:00 am on the College stage. Mr. Karthik M, Assistant Physical Director, Canara College was the Resource Person for the day.

Mr. Karthik M., expressed with pride that Yoga is India’s healthiest gift to the world. During his yoga session, he taught simple and beneficial yogasanas like tadasana, virabhadrasana, trikonasana and suryanamaskara to the volunteers and motivated them to practice it on a daily basis to derive its utmost benefit. He also emphasized that yoga boosts up the energy; helps maintain a healthy weight, improves immunity and enhances mental health. He also led a guided meditation session, which helped participants experience a sense of calm and relaxation.

Highlighting the theme for 2024- “Yoga for Self and Society”, Mr. Karthik urged the volunteers to experience the transformative effects firsthand and share the knowledge about the same with each one around them. Later in the evening, all the 256 NSS volunteers, while practicing yoga at their residence, took photos of the same and shared it on social media.

The idea of an international day to recognize and respect the practice of yoga was first made in 2014 by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi at the United Nations General Assembly. It was he who proposed the date of June 21 as it falls on the Summer Solstice of the Northern Hemisphere. This day marks the beginning of the summer season and is also the longest day of the year. The proposal was approved by 175 member states. Since then, every year, June 21 is internationally recognized as International Yoga Day by the UN General Assembly to highlight the importance of Yoga and its benefits on body, mind and soul.

On the occasion of International Yoga Day, the NSS Programme Officers Mrs. Seema Prabhu S. and Mrs. M. Keerthana Bhat enthusiastically performed the yoga postures along with their NSS Volunteers. Mr. Sourav Salian welcomed the resource person and proposed the vote of thanks. This programme successfully achieved its objectives, promoting healthy lifestyle and the holistic benefits of yoga.
