Workshop on Innovate with Confidence: IPR Fundamentals and best practices.

November 6, 2024

Promoting innovation and safeguarding original ideas rely on a solid understanding of intellectual property rights (IPR), including patents, trademarks, and copyrights. Recognizing this importance, Canara College’s IPR Cell organized a one day workshop titled “Innovate with Confidence: IPR Fundamentals & Best Practices” on November 6, 2024, under the auspices of the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Cell and the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC). This event, held in the college’s Seminar Hall, was designed to educate BBA and BCA students on essential aspects of IPR, with a focus on Trademark Basics and Copyright Enforcement.

The inaugural ceremony was attended by the Principal, Dr. Premalatha V; the conveners of the IPR Cell, Ms. Sushma R. Shetty and Mrs. Poornima Naik; and the resource person for the first session, Dr. Arathi Shanbhag. The ceremony began with a prayer offered by Mr. Agama Perla. Mrs. Poornima Naik, staff convener, warmly welcomed the attendees, and Mrs. Sushma R. Shetty provided an introduction to the workshop. Ms. Nidhisha introduced the resource persons, and the vote of thanks was delivered by Ms. Raksha, while Ms. Nishitha Mahalaxmikar hosted the event.

The workshop featured three informative sessions led by distinguished speaker. Dr. Arati Shanbhag, Associate Professor and Controller of Examinations at St. Aloysius College, inaugurated the sessions with a presentation on “IPR Fundamentals: Know Your Rights, Protect Your Work,” where she outlined the basics of intellectual property and emphasized the importance of safeguarding one’s creations. The second session was conducted by Dr. Balika, Associate Professor and Vice Principal at SDM Law College, who spoke on “Trademarks and Geographical Indications.” Her session highlighted the role of trademarks in brand protection and the significance of geographical indications in preserving regional product identity. The final session, titled “IPR Practices and Management,” was led by Dr.Santhosh Prabhu, Assistant Professor at SDM Law College, who shared insights into effective management practices for intellectual property rights, covering strategies for protection and monetization.

In total, 63 students from the BBA and BCA programs participated in and benefited from the workshop, gaining a deeper understanding of intellectual property rights and their practical applications.
