"Education is the manifestation of the perfection already within", said Swami Vivekananda. The earliest visionary of the region Sri Ammembal Subbarao Pai the founder of Canara Institutions and Canara Bank felt the need for spreading education among all to remove the superstitions and ignorance. Canara College was started in the year 1973 and Department of Commerce is one of the departments functioning since the inception of the College. The department started with 3 founder faculty with one batch. Gradually as the demand shot up for commerce, the batches had to be extended. Originally the department was affiliated to Mysore University. The college moved its affiliation to Mangalore University in the year 1980, the year in which Mangalore University was established.
At present, the Department of Commerce is the biggest department in the College, having 4 batches with one professional batch providing coaching for CA and CS. The Department has 12 faculty members with the total of 870 students. The commerce stream of the college is a favored choice among the aspiring commerce students in the region. The alumni of the department are placed in good positions in different organizations across the nations and many of them have turned into successful entrepreneurs. The programme provides a strong foundation for the professional courses such as CA, CS, CMA and this is reflected in the society as maximum number of practicing Chartered Accountants being the alumni of the college. In the present scenario, there is a paradigm shift in the educational field from teacher centric to student centric. Learner centered activities such as model bank competition; project reports, group discussions, paper presentations etc make the learning effective and informative. To disseminate knowledge, the Department organizes national conference ‘CANCON’ annually. The college provides a platform to harness and showcase the skills and talents of the students by organizing national level commerce fest ‘CANFEST’. The Department supports cordial student teacher relation and strives to uphold character and value based education. The department has a strong influence on the students which is observed through the alumni who are successfully placed worldwide.
